The first warm day of spring, with a low tide, almost always draws people out to stroll along the shore, to beachcomb, or explore the tidepools. The intertidal zone is home to an incredible diversity of plants and animals that live at the edge of the sea. As our population grows in coastal areas, so may our impacts on marine habitats. Protection of this fragile environment requires active participation and monitoring by local people and communities. Does there appear to be less marine life on a particular beach in recent years? Do you suspect that a nearby activity or industry is affecting the plants and animals of a particular shoreline? If you answered “yes” to either of these questions then Shorekeepers’ may be a way for you to address these concerns and contribute to a better understanding of the dynamics of intertidal habitats on the B.C. coast.
